One Step at a Time
Kings Kanyon
Today we tackled the Kings Canyon Rim Walk.
Before we even set off, everyone warned us about the first part.
The climb.
The walk starts with a section of steep steps straight up and the hardest part of the whole walk. So naturally, we warned the kids too. We told them to take their time.
Just one step at a time.
That once we reached the top, it would all get a little easier.
Like so many things in life, sometimes all you can do is keep putting one foot in front of the other.
And every now and then...
Stop. Turn around. Take in the view.
It's amazing how different the climb looks once you realise how far you've already come.
Every step up was worth it.
The top opened into a landscape that felt like another world.
Towering rocky domes, naturally carved staircases and cliffs stretching in every direction.
Then, almost unexpectedly, the walk wound its way down to a peaceful waterhole tucked between towering rock walls. An oasis in the middle of the desert.
The kind of place that makes you stop for a while before continuing on.
The girls absolutely smashed it.
No complaints. No dramas. Just one foot after the other.
Two and a half hours later we were almost back at the car when one of the girls looked at me and asked,
"Are we done yet?"
Immediately I assumed it was the classic "Are we there yet?" moment.
I smiled and told them they'd done so well.
"We're nearly there. Just a little bit further."
The girls burst out laughing.
"Mum!"
"You're meant to say... Not Done Yet!"
I couldn't help but laugh too.
Maybe this little idea we've been building really is starting to stick.
At least it is in our house.
Sarah.
